Family members...

If you are following the ambulance to the hospital with your loved one on board,
be sure that if the ambulance leaves the scene with lights and sirens,
PLEASE,
PLEASE
do not follow directly behind the ambulance.  You will need to obey all
traffic rules and regulations normally.  If you get into an accident on the way to the
hospital, then you won't be there for your loved one at the hospital.  
Please arrive safe and sound!

If you are following the ambulance and the crew suddenly turns on lights and
sirens, please again, obey all traffic rules and regulations normally.  
Parents, please remember to inform your children that
calling 911 as a joke is not the right thing to do.  
Please talk to your children about what an emergency is
and when to call 911 to help someone.....

When calling 911...

*   Stay calm and dial 9-1-1
*   Stay on the line and answer all questions until the
dispatcher hangs up
*   Know the address where you are and phone number
*   Tell the dispatcher
calmly and clearly what the emergency is
Before the ambulance arrives...

*   Assure the patient that help is on the way.  The more calm you are, the more  
    calm the patient will be.
*   Keep your phone line clear in case the 9-1-1 operator needs to call you back
*   If possible, send someone outside to direct the ambulance in
*   Wave a flashlight, turn on porch light, or turn on flashers of a car if it is dark   
or visibility is poor.
*   Secure all pets, especially dogs, in a separate area
*   Have a visible address that can be easily read from the street
*   Move any obstacles that might be in the way of getting to the patient.
*   Gather or make a list of medications that the patient is using and a list of
allergies.  Please give to the medical personnel.
