All About EMT's and Paramedic's
|
EMT's and Paramedic's play a cruical role in our community. Along with
Police and Fire Department personnel that aide EMS on the scene, they are
trained to respond to and care for patients in situations such as automobile
accidents, heart attacks, childbirth, victims of violence and any other
situation that may arise. A 911 operator dispatches EMT's and Paramedic's
to the scene of the injury or sickness. Once there, they determine the extent
of the patient's condition, give the appropriate emergency care and transport
to the appropriate medical facility. Prior to leaving the scene, the patient's
condition will be evaluated to determine whether it will be treated with BLS
(basic life support) or ALS (advanced life support) skills. BLS skills are
defined below under the title EMT. ALS skills are defined below under the
title of Paramedic. Approximately 5 minutes away from the hospital, the
EMT or Paramedic will contact the emergency room and notify them of the
patient's condition so that they can be prepared to treat them further in the
ER.
