We are very proud of our service and how it came about. We hope you enjoy reading the history of Meade County EMS. The employees here at Meade County EMS would like to thank you for visiting our website.

Meade County EMS, located in Brandenburg, KY started out in November of 1976, after the community realized
the need for quick and reliable medical treatment in the field. The Meade County citizens, wanting better
treatment for their sick and injured persons, established Meade County EMS. The service started off with six full
time and three part time Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s) whom dedicated their time working 24 hours at
a time, followed by 24 hours on call (available to respond from their home) then 24 hours off. Making an average
of 4 runs per day, they served a population of approximately 17,000. Starting from 1976 until 1984, Meade
County EMS shared a building with the Meade County Fire Department. Needing their own space and more
room, Meade County Fiscal Court built EMS their own station in Brandenburg next to the fire department, where it
is still located and operated out of to this date. Meade County EMS responded at a Basic life support level until
1992, when at this time they added Advanced life support into their protocols.
In 1992, the mother of David Pace, current Mayor of Brandenburg, had gone into cardiopulmonary arrest (her
heart had stopped and she was not breathing). Meade County EMS responded to the scene, quickly realized she
was in a critical, life threatening condition and called for the assistance of Larry Naser, an off duty Paramedic from
Jefferson County EMS, also then the Fire Chief of Meade County Fire Dept. Paramedic Naser responded in his
private vehicle to this emergency and performed Advanced life support, including the use of a defibrillator,
shocking her heart. With the assistance of Larry Naser, Meade County EMS saved this woman’s life and she is
still taking care of her family today. This led to Meade County Fiscal Court establishing Advanced life support in
the county in 1992, with Larry Naser being the first Paramedic to be employeed by Meade County EMS. He was
on call and responded in a chase car, donated by Mr. Tony Brown (family of David Pace) Monday thru Friday, 24
hours a day.
Throughout the years, Meade County has grown in population, run volume and workforce. In June of 2002, we
opened a second EMS station located in Flaherty, to reduce the response time in that area. In August of 2004, a
third station was opened in Payneville, reducing response time to that end of the county also. Today we serve a
population of approximately 30,000 and make on average some six to ten calls a day, ranging anywhere from non-
emergency transfers to the most critical sick or injured patients.
We are currently employed with 9 full time EMT’s and 9 full time Paramedic’s. We also staff 8 part time EMT’s and
6 part time Paramedic’s, for a total of over two hundred years of field experience. Three ambulances are currently
staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and are strategically placed throughout the county. We purchase our
ambulances brand new each year and rotate the older vehicles out of service.
We have a recent purchase that we are very proud of: “Andy” the ambulance. With the help of “Andy”, we are
now teaching safety to our children in the local schools and daycares. For more information in regards to “Andy”,
please reference the top of the page for the link Andy the ambulance.
There is no telling what the future will hold for Meade County EMS, but we will adapt to offer the best medical
treatment that our citizens deserve, just as we have since 1976.
